CFA-Homes and Student-Homes

After connecting to fs.fa.utah.edu (described in the articles Connect from a Mac or Connect from a PC), you can mount the CFA-Homes volume and — if you are an instructor or student with access to course space — the Student-Homes volume.

The folders on CFA-Homes and Student-Homes have the same structure. Each contains 4 folders: Dropbox, Private, Public, and Sites.

Dropbox
The Dropbox is a place where anyone with access to the volume can put files for the Dropbox’s owner. Only the person whose home folder the dropbox is in can read all the files inside it, although the person who puts a file into someone else’s Dropbox will be able to see the file. This folder is often used for returning marked papers to students or giving a document or media file to a specific person.
Private
The Private folder can only be seen by the person whose home folder it is inside. It is used to store an individual’s files that are not being shared with others.
Public
The Public folder is accessible to any person who can mount the volume in question: Any person on campus for the CFA-Homes volume, and any CFA instructor or student with access to course space for the Student-Homes volume. All files within this folder are visible to others.
Sites
The Sites folder can house html web pages that are then accessible via the URL sites.fa.utah.edu/~homefoldername for CFA-Homes folders, or students.fa.utah.edu/~homefoldername for Student-Homes
